The Red Lion

The Fern
At the heart of Fernhurst’s recreation ground, The Pavilion is a real hub for village life, bringing together sport, community events and a relaxed place to meet. Home to local clubs and activities, it also offers space to sit out overlooking the playing fields, while The Fern café adds coffee, light bites and casual food throughout the day.

Black Down
Black Down is a beautiful National Trust spot on the edge of Fernhurst, with woodland trails, open heath and far-reaching views across the surrounding countryside. It’s a lovely place for a peaceful walk, with routes leading through the trees and up towards the Temple of the Winds viewpoint.

A little local knowledge
Fernhurst was once an important centre for Wealden ironworking. The village furnace produced iron for more than two centuries, including agricultural tools, domestic items and even ships’ cannons.
The village green has been at the heart of Fernhurst for centuries. Fernhurst originally developed around the crossroads and green, which remain central to village life today.
Black Down, the highest point in Sussex, rises just to the north-east of the village. Its wooded slopes and footpaths are a defining part of Fernhurst’s landscape.
